Statutory Paternity Pay

Statutory Paternity Pay is a weekly benefit available to father’s (or same sex partners) who are expecting a child

Basic eligibility

You must have worked for the same company for 26 weeks consecutively including up to the 15th week before the baby is due. You must also continue working for the same company up until the baby is born.

If your partner does not use up all their maternity pay or adoption pay (and returns to work) then you could claim their unused allowance.

How much will I get?

Paid for one or two weeks

90% of your average weekly wage (pre tax) or £148.68 – whatever is lower

How do I apply?

You need inform the company you are working for at least 15 weeks before the baby is due. They may ask for a completed SC3 form to prove you are eligible to claim.

How will I get paid the money?

Paid with your wages via PAYE

You can either start payments on the day the baby is born OR on a pre agreed date with your employer (this must be inside 56 days of the birth date). For adoption, swap the birth date for the date the baby is placed with you

Impact on other benefits

Counted as income when calculated alongside other means-tested benefit claims BUT not included as part of the Benefits Cap.
