Bereavement Allowance

Bereavement Allowance (formerly known as Widows Pension) is a non-means tested weekly benefit available to those whose partner, husband or spouse has passed away. It is administered by Jobcentre Plus and is paid for up to a year after your partner died.

Basic Eligibility Criteria

You can make a claim so long as…

  • Your partner died before 6th April 2017
  • You are aged over 45 but below the State pension age
  • Your late husband, wife or partner had paid NI contributions (or they died as a result of an industrial accident or disease).

You may still be able to claim if you are over the State pension age if your late partner was not entitled to a State pension based on their NI contributions.

However, there are some restrictions. You cannot make a claim if…

  • You remarry or enter a civil partnership (or live as a couple with someone else)
  • You are in prison
  • You are bringing up children (you may be able to claim Widows Parent’s Allowance)
  • You were divorced at the time of their death
  • You were over the state pension age when they passed away (you could get extra State Pension)

If you are bringing up children you can instead claim Widowed Parents Allowance.

How much will I get?

The amount you can claim is dependent on your age. For those aged 45 to 54, the amount can vary from a minimum of £35.97 up to a maximum £119.90.
