Severe Disablement Premium is an additional amount of financial support made automatically available to those who have to deal with the cost of being disabled. It can be included with a number of means tested benefits including…

  • Income Support
  • Employment & Support Allowance (income-related)
  • Jobseeker’s Allowance (income-based)
  • Guarantee Pension Credit
  • Housing Benefit

But can also be awarded to people in receipt of…

  • Attendance Allowance
  • Constant Attendance Allowance (with Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit or War Pension)
  • Disability Living Allowance (care component middle and top rate)
  • Personal Independence Payment (daily living component)
  • Armed Forces Independence Payment

It should be noted Severe Disablement Premium cannot be included with a claim for Universal Credit.

You must also meet these other qualifying criteria..

Single People

You have to be in receipt of a qualifying benefit

AND

Nobody can be in receipt of Carer’s Allowance or the Carers part of Universal Credit

AND

You must live on your own

AND

Have no one aged over 18 living with your who is a non-dependent (exceptions are made to this rule if the person who is aged over 18 is blind OR receives a qualifying benefit themselves).

Couples

You both must be in receipt of a qualifying benefit

AND

Nobody can be in receipt of Carer’s Allowance or the Carers part of Universal Credit

AND

You must reside alone

AND

Have no one aged over 18 living with your who is a non-dependent (exceptions are made to this rule if the person who is aged over 18 is blind or receives a qualifying benefit themselves)

OR

Somebody claims Carer’s Allowance or the Carers part of Universal Credit who cares for you but also meets the other conditions set out above. In this instance SDP will be paid at the single rate.

Even if receiving other benefits has prevented you from claiming claim Carer’s Allowance you may still be able to claim SDP

If you are a carer you should be aware that a successful claim for carers allowance (or the carer’s part of Universal Credit) could result in the person being cared for being unable to receive Severe Disablement Premium. The same scenario could also impact upon their ability to claim Council Tax Reduction.
