Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit

Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit is paid to those who have contracted a disease or sustained an industrial injury whilst in the workplace. The benefit is non-means tested and does not have any income or personal savings restrictions.

Basic Eligibility

The DWP lists this technical guidance which outlines which types of diseases and industrial injuries will allow an individual to qualify for this benefit.

It is worth noting your injury does not have to be a career ending one as you can also claim if you have gone back to work.

You cannot claim if you were self-employed.

How will I be assessed?

The claims process is complex and you will need to undergo a medical assessment by a doctor. You will be given a percentage score based on this examination which will then determine if you can claim any compensation (and if you can – the amount). It should be noted only injuries or diseases sustained from the accident itself can be calculated towards your claim.

You maybe reassessed or you may have the initial examination valid for the rest of your life, depending on the severity of your medical condition. You may also be reassessed if the injury worsens over time.

How much will I get?

The amount you will receive will depend on your percentage score given from the medical assessment. If you were to receive a 100% score then you would be able to claim the maximum amount which is £169.70 per week

The minimum percentage is 14% in order to claim compensation, although anyone with a percentage score of 14% to 20% will have this rounded up for payment purposes. Below are the 2018 – 2019 rates by percentage score.
